Coin collectors and other Americans will have to wait until 2016 to see what may be the final issue in the Presidential Dollar series-commemorating Gerald Ford. No other recent Presidents will be honored unless they have passed away at least two years prior to the date of the coin issue-and the coins must be issued in the order in which the Presidents served. That's the rule contained in the original legislation approving the issuance of Presidential Dollars at the rate of four per year, beginning in 2007. So Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, William Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, et al may never appear in the Presidential Dollar series. And it is questionable whether Reagan can appear if his predecessor Jimmy Carter is still living.
But there is no question that Carter, Reagan, H. W. Bush, Clinton, W. Bush and Obama (along with their predecessors) all appear on the Presidential Five-Dollar coin series issued by the Republic of Liberia in 2010, and that are available now.
Liberia has good reasons to honor American Presidents. It was founded in 1822 by former U.S. slaves, who were sent there by the American Colonization Society (ACS). Liberia's capitol, Monrovia, was named for the American President James Monroe who was a former president of the ACS and the President of the U.S. when the colony was founded. Many of our Presidents have had personal relationships with Liberia, ranging from Abraham Lincoln appointing the first Commissioner/Consul General in 1863, to President Truman appointing the first black Ambassador in 1949, and to President Reagan's meeting with Liberian President Samuel K. Doe in the White House in 1982. In a White House meeting in May, 2010 President Obama told the first female head-of-state of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf: "I want to make sure the people of Liberia understand... that the United States is a constant friend and partner."
The United States Presidential Dollars are the first U.S. coins in the history of our nation not to have "LIBERTY" inscribed because, according to the Congressional bill, "the use of a design bearing the likeness of the Statue of Liberty... adequately conveys the concept of Liberty," However, the Liberian coins do include the word "LIBERTY" as part of their motto "THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE" that appears together with the coat-of-arms on the reverse of each Presidential Five Dollar coin.
Each Presidential Five Dollar coin features a full color inset consisting of an embossed Presidential portrait and an appropriate background. Many backgrounds include monuments, Presidential libraries, etc. Reagan's coin pictures the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, where he gave his famous "Tear down this wall" speech, Wilson's coin shows a portion of a 1934 $100,000 bill that features his portrait, Teddy Roosevelt's coin depicts the Grand Canyon, etc. Each 40mm prooflike brilliant uncirculated coin is larger than a silver dollar, and is layered in pure silver. The issue price is $15.95 per coin, and if all 44 coins are ordered at the special price of only $500 (save over $200), they will come in a handsome custom case at no additional cost. Purchasers can also opt to obtain the coins at a rate of 4 per month for $50 (save over $150)-and they will also receive the free custom case with the fourth shipment. Sets are also available of all 19 Republican Presidents from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush for $250 (save over $50) including a box, and all 14 Democratic Presidents from Andrew Jackson to Barack Obama for $185 (save almost $40) including box.
