DIRTY DANCING NIGHTS
With the recent explosion in popularity of dance shows on TV, I decided to go back and take another look at a couple of classic dance movies, Dirty Dancing and Havana Nights-Dirty Dancing. The original is truly a classic-a perfect, sweet and fun movie, but the newer one is much more sensuous and arousing and has become a cult classic. While sometimes slipping into the realm of cornball, both movies have a fun, flirty feel that makes up for any script lapses.
DIRTY DANCING
The original of the Dirty Dancing movies starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, it was a huge hit and has become a classic. Probably one of the best movies of the 80's, and along with Red Dawn the beginning of a huge crush on Jennifer Grey for many a teenage boy. The story is pretty simple; a slightly shy teen girl who leads a sheltered life meets bad boy dancer with a heart of gold. The girl comes out of her shell, the guy learns to care and they both get an important life lesson about people on all levels of the social strata. It's a real fun and flirty movie. The characters are great and the movie brings out a very nostalgic and sweet feeling. Sexy and classy this is just a great story and a very pleasurable movie to watch.
HAVANA NIGHTS
In Havana Nights Katie (Romola Garai) has just moved to pre-Castro Cuba. She's a typical mousy bookworm, but then she meets hotel waiter Javier (Diego Luna) and is totally swept away. The storyline is pretty much the same as the original; Disapproving parents, set-up with guy she hates, stiffness and uneasiness with dancing.
The cinematography is amazing, and the colors just pop out. The dialogue is pretty bad, but the two leads are so likable and have such great chemistry that it more than makes up for the writing. With plenty of sweaty intertwined limbs this Dirty Dancing is more "dirty dancing" then the original, but it manages to stay with the right tone. Pretty cool that Patrick Swayze has an appearance as a dance instructor. It's just a small cameo, but still a neat touch.
Because of the popularity of these movies and also TV shows like Dancing with the Stars and So, You Think You Can Dance? many people have shown an interest in learning the different styles of Ballroom Dancing.
