If you are trying to lose weight, one of your goals along the way should be to increase our metabolism. Unfortunately, we often do too many things that decrease our metabolism. Obviously this works against any type of weight loss and instead leads to weight gain.
Here are the top five things people do to decrease their metabolism.
Skipping Meals - the human body is a wonderfully efficient and adaptable machine. You can actually train your body to rely on less food. All of your bodily functions slow down when not enough food is consumed. This is why you get low on energy when you do not eat. When the body slows down, metabolism decreases. When metabolism decreases, less calories are burned.
Snacking on foods with high sugar content - while we want to eats some sugars in our regular food, snacking on them is a different story. Have you ever sat down with a carton of ice cream or a bag of chips? A pint carton of Ben & Jerry's can have 1000 calories in it plus the sugar. Sugar we do not use gets stored. The final resting place of that storage is either you waist or hips.
Fasting - just like skipping meals, fasting has the same effect. The difference is that once you start fasting, the body takes longer to realize it does not have to keep the metabolism down.
Low-Calorie Diet - Once again this has a similar affect as fasting or skipping meals. The body regulates itself that it will only receive x amount of calories a day. Lowered metabolism is once again the result.
Lack of Exercise - A pound of fat uses less calories a day than a pound of muscle. Exercise turns pounds of fat into pounds of muscle. Muscle-bound individuals are calorie burning machines. If you are sitting on the couch, you do nothing to gain muscle mass.
To lose weight, we need to burn more calories than we take in, eat better, eat more times per day and exercise regularly. Not only will we lose weight, we also train our bodies to be high metabolism engines.
