Question about music in general? Need help?
OK, so hi, I'm an 11 year-old girl and I'm a big fan of:
-> Rock 'n' roll
-> Grunge
-> Alternative (but NOT EMO!!!!!!!)
-> Punk (real punk, not Green Day)
-> Indie
People in my school (all-girls school) say that the music I listen to isn't real music and that it's "old man's music", so I get picked on for that. Are they right?
There's this girl in my year that has a sister in Year 9. She is what you would call a "scene kid" and one of her friends (who is only 13) has her arm pierced while her best friend (who is 13 too) has a belly-button pierced. They love Green Day and today the girl in my year, started yelling at me because I said Green Day are poser punks. Then she said all these scene's and emo kids are "alternative".
Help me out here, are they right?
For your answer you need to look at the basis of the genres not what these know it all teens tell you.
For example, a lot of what ignorant teens call "emo" music is simply alternative music, with no aspect of the infamous meaning of "emo" music. In blind perspective people will hear "emo" and think sad people wearing hair over their eyes and want to kill themselves. That their music is all depressing and suicidal. However you can easily relate such general terms to any other music that talks about heartbreak and how life is bringing them down, am I right?
Green Day can be listed under alternative because their style of music, overall, fits into the genre. It's ok, trust me. Many people can't stand a that a band they dislike fits directly into a genre that they love, happens to me all the time. Just look past it.
Emo actually derived from hardcore punk and not alternative. But today so many bands are becoming copies of one another that it just becomes alternative rock and metal. Emo, in modern dayterms, is less of a genre, and more of a adjective for a song.
In short I'll tell you that they are wrong in general, but what is right is that it in fact can fit under the alternative genre.
Scene style, first and foremost is not related to music at all. It is a fashion, style trend that started out small. Emo "fashion" was derived from scene style in efforts to make themselves "different" and having the depressed/angry appearance. Yet in all the hype of the emo culture, they have strayed away from different and become clones of each other in its entirety.
Don't sweat it and listen to what you like, and keep believing what you believe is good music. These girls sound like they in it because of the "hype", just more clones. Good luck
