In February of 2009 President Obama signed the Recovery and Reinvestment Act into Law. Included in the law was a mandate for the Recovery.gov website to make the $787 billion in spending accountable and transparent for taxpayers.
The website has come a long way from the February evening when so many of us headed there as President Obama mentioned the website in his Address to Congress. Obama has deemed this summer as "Recovery Summer" and once again people are being encouraged to visit the Recovery.gov website and "see for themselves."
Fifteen months later many still describe the economy as sluggish as best and employment continues to be as high as 10% but the numbers on the Recovery.gov website do offer some insight.
First of all, only about half of the money has been paid out.
The Numbers on Recovery.gov:
Of the 288 billion marked for tax relief, 163 billion has been released.
Of the 275 billion marked for contracts, grants and loans, only 118 billion has been paid out.
Of the 224 billion marked for entitlements, 134 billion has been paid out.
According the Recovery.gov, reported funded jobs from the first quarter, January through March 2010 at 682, 370.
One of the complaints along the way has been that recipients are reporting back on how funds are being spent in a timely manner. Now at the Recovery.gov you can to see a list of "Non-reporters & Significant Non-compliers."
For what has been reported you can find details about allocated funds and recovery projects. You can even search by zip code for projects in your area.
These projects include 10,000 construction projects, 30,000 miles of highway and 80,000 homes to be weatherized.
Some of the feature stories you can check on Recovery.gov include:
-Energy Tax Credits extended
-Beware of Potential Recovery Scams
-Evacuation routes in Florida get Reconstructed
In the right hand corner you'll find a big red button for reporting stimulus package fraud, abuse or waste. Forty-three cases thus far have been accepted for prosecution.
What else can you find at the Recovery.gov website?
-Video messages from the President
-A scrollable timeline of Recovery and Reinvestment Act milestones
-Highlights of the Recovery Act with a link to the full Act
There are connections to social media so you can join Recovery.gov on Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube or Twitter.
Recovery.gov has 61 friends on MySpace.
On Facebook 2,922 people gave a "Like" thumbs up to the Recovery.gov website.
You can view Flickr photos of Recovery projects or upload them. Many of the photos show the Recovery logo in the photo.
You are encouraged to share your own "recovery" success story.
You can see photos and read bios on the 13 Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board.
