MASH had been based on a novel written by Richard Hooker. Based on the novel in 1970 MASH movie had been released. It was two years later that MASH had been released as a television sitcom which experienced much success. The show managed to be on air for as many as eleven seasons and because of its blend of comedy and drama it came to be recognized as one of the most successful shows on the history of television.
The success of the show had been such that in 1983 the show broke all records and the season finale had the largest audience ever in the history of television even beating the records of SuperBowls. MASH had been considered to be an iconic sitcoms of its time, a format which nobody else has been able to duplicate with any success yet.
The background of the series has been based in South Korea during the Korea War. MASH stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The story revolves around the lives of the women and men who work at this hospital surrounded by minefields and enemies with danger lurking at every corner. These people were responsible for taking care of American soldiers who had been wounded in the war.
What was quite different about the show is that the cast had been quite large, which was uncommon at that time. the main characters had been Doctor John McIntyre, played by Wayne Rogers and Doctor Benjamin Pierce, played by Alan Alda who were both the main surgeons. Both of these characters had been quite interesting as efficient doctors who also happen to be fond of alcohol and women.
Doctor Frank Burns, played by Larry Linville and Margaret Houlihan, played by Loretta Swit were the other two important characters on the show. Through the show there also had been a few cast changes but the success of the show had never been dampened by it.
The comedy part was provided by Max Klinger, played by Jamie Farr who often dressed in women's clothes to get a discharge while Father Francis Mulcahy, played by William Christopher adds his own unique touch to the show.
The other interesting characters on the show are Colonel Henry Blake, played by McLean Stevenson, Walter O'Reilly played by Gary Burghoff and Sherman Potter played by Harry Morgan. MASH seasons 1-11 set dvd is a perfect collection for anyone to have since the series is classic comedy and drama. There has never been another show on the same format on television again.
