Flying Down to Rio (1933) a remarkable musical film is about bandleader and aviator, Roger Bond. However he always gets his band fired from work by flirting with the ladies present in the audience. He falls for a Brazilian lady, Belinha and it seems serious. The lady however can't decide between Roger and her fiancé. Roger and Belinha find their chance when the plane Roger flies to Brazil runs into trouble. It's a quaint and lovely musical revolving around a love story but what sets this movie apart are its special effects.
The movie is also remembered for it is the first movie to witness the pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It put this iconic couple together on the dance floor. Also a delight to the movie is the cast of supporting characters. Belinha played by Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, as Roger Bond is a great addition to the movie.
The movie, Flying Down to Rio (1933) opens with an airplane zooming and flying right into the audience revealing the cast list. This movie is famous for its aerial ballet. Beautifully dressed girls dancing on the wings of an airplane and flying over the exotic city of Rio De Janerio obviously captures the attention of the audience. The technique of "trick photography" as applied in this shot. The airplanes used in this shot were real though.
Linwood G. Dunn was in charge of the special effects of Flying Down to Rio (1933). An Academy winner in his forte he had a role to play in the amazing visual effects of King Kong and Star Trek series. His specialty was that he created a technique that allowed him to combine two pictures or images on a frame, in a frame-by-frame basis. He could control the light, the focus and other factors to create the perfect illusion or effect. Hence by applying this technique he could mount the dancer girls safely onto the wings of a stationery plane. He could photograph this setup against the backdrop of the city, Rio de Janerio and create the effect that the girls were flying over Rio.
Flying Down to Rio (1933) is remembered and celebrated for its ultimate wing dance sequence. There is still a troupe in England who performs the stunts from the movie.
