Photo pass--how to go about getting one?!?
I am wanting to delve deeper into concert photography, and would love to shoot some shows that are coming through my city soon.
My question is-how do I go about getting a photo/press pass?
I've talked to people about how to get them, and they say I need to be with a publication, yet they only run a photo myspace.
So. Would it suffice if I set up a photo myspace and said that I would promote the band on there? I am also setting up a myspace to solely promote bands.
This isn't just so I can take pictures of bands--I have a genuine interest.
Most of the time you will need to be endorsed by someone who matters - a publication, editor or someone who works at the place. I get gig passes from my editor- before that, I couldn't get into a show.
Have you tried befriending local bands/singers and asking if you could come along and take photos if they put you on the guestlist? I find it really helps, because most people don't turn down free publicity. Once you build up a good portfolio, you could start sending in photos to different publications - I've noticed that even if they do turn you down, they give great critique. What's more is that they might even let you do some voluntary work if they think you have great potential.
Also, regarding photo myspaces - they are a great way to network. I think you should go for it, it can only do you good.
