Most of us who garden and/or compost haven't even started thinking about the new season coming up in the Spring. Why, we just finished cleaning up our yards and garden areas from this season! And, unless you have a compost making system such as one with a kitchen crock and one of those small back porch compost tumblers, your compost making efforts may slow down during the colder months as well.

But the avid gardeners or composters on YOUR Christmas list are already planning for next season. They are counting the days until the new seed catalogs come out and the seedling plants are available at the nurseries. They can't wait for the ground to thaw, or change back from a soggy mess of mud to actual soil, so they can go outside and start poking around. They want to get their hands back in the soil. They don't mind dirt under their fingernails and all over the back porch.

So bring joy to their hearts and a smile to their faces when they open their Christmas gifts and find the special gardening or compost making items you picked out especially for them.

Here are some great ideas:

Garden clogs - these are really nice and you can slip in and out of them with ease;
Thermometer to take the temperature of compost so they'll know if it's cooking or just sitting there;
Claw fork compost turner - this is really handy if you have a wormery and need to aerate the organic compost material you put in the top bin;
Bucket of worms - make sure they actually have a wormery - or like to fish!
A kitchen crock or pail, maybe one of the nice bamboo ones. These are so cute sitting on the kitchen counter and come with filters so they are odor free;
A book about any of the different composting making methods - mushroom composting, a wormery, the Bokashi System, compost tumblers, a pile and a pitchfork, or even a regular compost bin;
An extra wormery just for their dog or cat poop. The resulting "castings" can be used in an ornamental garden, but not a food producing area;
A new pitchfork for the die-hards who will always want to do it the old-fashioned way;
A Bag of Bokashi refill if they are using the Bokashi System;
A Composter Aerator Tool. This is handy for a compost bin or pile;
A Gift certificate to their favorite gardening store - stick it inside of the book on compost making you also bought them;
A Custom t-shirt - "I love my Wormery" - or something like that!

If you have someone on your list who just moved into a new place and they now have room to garden and/or compost - and you think they would like to compost - a simple starter compost making system, like Bokashi, or a Wormery, might be fun. You could also give them a book or two on the various forms of compost making.
