Today is the day they had the memorial ceremony for Michael Jackson, self-proclaimed King of Pop. In these past several weeks not only did we lose Michael we also lost Ed McMahon Farrah Fawcett, David Carradine, Robert McNamara, and Karl Malden. You see for me all these people were of my era.
I stayed up late at night watching the Johnny Carson show and laugh more at Ed McMahon at times than Johnny's jokes. He was the consummate straight man for Carson. I looked forward to watching the Streets of San Francisco with Michael Douglas and Karl Malden two tough San Francisco cops chasing and catching criminals.
I didn't have the famous Farrah poster, many of my friends did. I don't think I missed an episode of Charlie's Angels and the show wasn't the same when she left. One of my favorite shows was Kung Fu starring David Carradine, who can forget the phrase, "grasshopper?"
Then there was Robert McNamara, one of the wizards behind the Viet Nam war. The person who wouldn't admit that he was wrong and continued advising we send thousands of young men and women over to a country fighting a war that nobody but him understood. I wonder, we have a group of people we call neo-conservatives who believe that it's our destiny to spread democracy throughout the world. Is it possible these people are still trying to win the one war we lost?
I remember when I first saw Michael on the Ed Sullivan show. Like so many others I was astounded by this young boy and his brothers, and rushed out and bought his albums and forty-five records. (CD's and iTunes were a long way off.) I enjoyed his music and thought he would have a long and industrious career. Who would have predicted he would have such a tortuous life, one that was filled with self-doubt, confliction and identity crisis.
I supposed we all wished he hadn't taken on such a weird persona and starting thinking he was more important than he really was. After all, he was just an entertainer. He was a very talented entertainer, but at the end of the day that was all he was.
He was influenced by the power and stardom he gained and succumbed to its whimsical wants and desires. Those who say they had his best interests at heart were just there for their own gain and grasping for all they could get through him.
Today, we are witness to his passing and the numbers of people who are touting his musical and charitable contributions juxtaposed with those who are vilifying him as a child molester and pedophile. Keeping in mind he wasn't convicted, (but he did pay large sums of money to his alleged victims) should we be honoring a man with the type of baggage he has accumulated over time? Can we realistically walk the fine line of looking at the good he did versus the bad he was accused of? Should we ignore it? Are his contributions to society without merit because of what he was accused but not convicted of?
Both the print and visual media have spent countless of hours sharing his life story with us, right up to the heart wrenching moments of his daughter sharing her love for her recently departed father. I can't let go of the feeling, should I feel bad for Michael Jackson?
I will wrestle with my own feelings and eventually come to a conclusion. But for now I feel badly for his children and parents. Having to grow up without one's father at a young age is something no child should have to go through. The loss of a child, before their time is also something no parent should go through.
With the recent deaths of so many people of my era it's making me reflect on the changes I've seen. It's sad whenever anyone dies, and recently we have lost a number of influential and history impacting people way too soon.
They will all be missed, but despite his flaws, I will miss Michael Jackson the most. He did leave before his time. In the final analysis it is up to God - not us - to us to pass final judgment on him for his actions.
I will miss his phenomenal talent he had left us way too soon. I just don't know if I should feel bad for him.
