This article contains 11 top tips for how to clean and take care of jewelry pendants especially those containing gemstones.
1. Always remove any make-up or other substances at the end of each night using a 100 per cent cotton cloth. Be especially careful when cleaning sterling silver because this metal is extremely soft and can be easily damaged if mishandled.
2. The best way to remove dirt, grease or finger marks is to mix a small amount of soap or shampoo into half cup of warm water, soak the jewelry pendants for 2-3 minutes, rinse them thoroughly with clean water and dry thoroughly. Finally, store the cleaned jewelry in an airtight bag.
3. Caution must be taken when using the above mentioned method to clean jewelry that has soft gemstones. Soaking jewelry in any solution can damage the stone's polish. Jewelry must never be cleaned in a bleach solution.
4. The best way to remove tarnish is to polish the jewelry item using a 100 per cent cotton cloth and a nonabrasive metal cleaning substance. Carefully rinse the gemstones with clean water to remove any traces of the cleaner.
5. Always use 100 per cent cotton as a polishing cloth since other fabrics often contain wood fibers or synthetics. These types of fibers have been known to scratch metals, especially sterling silver.
6. Always take off your rings and jewelry pendants before using anything with bleach in it. Bleach can cause gold and other metal alloys to breakdown leaving the metal irreparably damaged.
7. Be sure to change the cloth you are using regularly as the dirt and grease left on the cloth from a previous cleaning might now leave scrapes and pits in the current piece of jewelry you are trying to clean and polish.
8. There are many websites that suggest using toothpaste to clean jewelry, but any jeweler will tell you that you must never do this! The abrasives in toothpaste can damage the metal. Toothpaste will also damage gemstones such as amber, lapis and turquoise.
9. Be careful when using ultrasonic cleaners. These are great for using on certain jewelry pendants but they can cause damage to many gemstones and the chemicals should not be used on fine stones such as pearls. If ultrasonic cleansers are used too often they can loosen the settings on the pendant causing the gemstones to become detached.
10. Never use any of the following substances to clean and care for your jewelry: acetone, alcohol, ammonia and turpentine. These substances can cause damage and/or dulling to softer gemstones. Never use products with petroleum in them on pearls or amber jewelry pendants because prolonged contact can cause significant damage to both.
11. Be very careful if you are wearing an opal ring in strong sunlight because this can dry out the water in opals which can cause discoloring to occur. Soft stones can easily be scratched by pin stems and the edges of other jewelry.
