A fan of the Simpsons will be hard pressed to find better Simpsons games than Simpsons Road Rage and Simpson Hit and Run. These two games showcase the best of Springfield and allow players to step into Homer Simpson's shoes as he tried his best to save his beloved yet dysfunctional town. While many television shows that are turned into video games are lackluster at best, both of these games present their own charm while being careful not to tamper with the method of humor that makes the Simpsons so popular.
In Simpsons Road Rage, the player is allowed to step into the shoes of Homer Simpson and a slew of unlock-able characters, both major ones such as Bart or Lisa, and relatively minor characters like Abu, Fred Flanders, and even Krusty the Klown. The game mechanics are very similar to Crazy Taxi. In 2003, Sega decided that the game was too similar to Crazy Taxi and filed a law suit which was settled outside of court. The player is tasked with picking up characters in and around Springfield and driving them to their destination in a certain amount of time. This task is made difficult, yet enjoyable as there are many obstacles to avoid such as a radioactive bus that seems to have it in for the player, as well as Mr. Burns who will occasionally appear and try to run the player off the road.
Simpsons Hit and Run shares many similarities with Grand Theft Auto, and unlike Road Rage, the player is able to get out of his vehicle to create mayhem with multiple different kinds of attacks. The same lunacy and antics can be expected from the story of this game as the television show, including aliens, robotic bees, and zombies which all threaten the safety of Springfield. Multiple characters can be unlocked, much like Road Rage, but these characters offer different abilities and attacks that help mix up the game play. There is a handful of mini games that can be played throughout the town, as well as seven different levels that are all tied together with an overarching story.
If the Simpsons do no impress, then perhaps Family Guy games are more appealing. The Family Guy Video Game was released on the Xbox, Playstation Portable, and Playstation 2 in 2006. The game play varies throughout the twenty two levels. The characters that are playable include Stewie, Peter, and Brian who are all fan favorites from the show. The game received mediocre reviews, but for any fan of the television show that can appreciate the zany and sometimes moronic gags that Family Guy is known for, it is possible to overlook the game's flaws and enjoy a good time.
