The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan is a novel about demons, magicians, and a bad boy hunk who's more than anyone thinks he is. Brennan's debut novel might not catch your attention, but the author's name is quite enough to do so.
For anyone who has encountered fan fiction and Harry Potter in once sentence, you'd know who Sarah Rees Brennan is. In her debut novel, Brennan still tackles magic and the world of the unknown but this time, she uses her own protagonist-Nick. Creating a different perspective from an already published work is entirely different from creating your own world, but Brennan manages to fit in. Her words still bear traces of fan fiction-a trait that could entice the readers to get a copy of her book. After all, how many fan fiction writers get to publish their own works?
Nick's story, however, is unlike Harry's in a number of ways. He has his family with him (a brother, and a mother driven mad by the antagonists) and has a desire to quit to school. The differences don't stop there; in Brennan's world, all magicians are evil and corrupt. They are the reason why Nick and his family have to relocate as constantly as they can; the magicians want them dead and they will do everything in their power to accomplish that. These and a few more create quite a twisted world-one that would make sense only if you finish the book.
The Demon's Lexicon is fast-paced and some readers might find that a bit confusing but Brennan manages to pull it all off. It is this style of writing that brings life to Nick's character; the flow of the story seems to be as fast as the way Nick thinks and that's one of the things that make this novel very refreshing. Brennan starts her story in the middle, connecting the dots along the way. I'm sure that fans of her former works are already checking their calendars, waiting for The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan to come out this June.
