She was not 16 or 17 (the edge of seventeen) as many guess.
Stevie Nicks says the deaths of her uncle Jon and John Lennon were the inspiration for the song. She went home to Phoenix after John Lennon died (December 8, 1980) and started writing the song about the white winged dove, then her uncle died a couple of weeks later. So it's unclear if the song was written at the end of 1980 or beginning of 1981 and released on Bella Donna in July 1981. She was born May 26 1948, it appears that she was 32, since the song was written before her birthday that year.
Incidently, the title came from a conversation she had with Tom Petty's wife Jane. Jane said they met "at the age of seventeen," but her strong Southern accent made it sound like "edge of seventeen" to Nicks. The singer liked the sound of the phrase so much that she told Jane she would write a song for it and give her credit for the inspiration.
