Once, he was just a grinning doctor on ER. Critics said he couldn't make it in the film industry. Now George Clooney is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. With skills that are equally relevant in comedy and drama, Clooney has even distinguished himself with his scripts and his direction. Here are his five best films as an actor now playing on satellite TV.
5. Ocean's Eleven. Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack had the original idea: Get the coolest guys in show business together, give them a few good lines and let the audience have fun. By the way, make sure you have an all-access pass to Las Vegas. The problem was the script was a little weak, the direction a little sloppy. Steven Soderbergh did it the right way, with Clooney, Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle carrying a fun movie for all. With two sequels already done, the formula certainly was winning.
4. Burn After Reading. Clooney the comedian has become a fixture in the movies and the Coen Brothers latest release made good use of his goofy charm. As the Federal Marshal who "never discharged his firearm" in his career until one fateful afternoon at his lover's house, Clooney has an easy smile for the ladies while a terror for the unseen in Washington, D.C.'s dark corners. Now featured on HBO in HD on satellite television, Burn After Reading also has Brad Pitt in one of his funniest moments.
3. O Brother, Where Art Thou? To call this film unique would be an understatement, but the best way to describe this Coen Brothers romp is a road movie for escaped convicts in rural America. With John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson in tow, the three bumbling treasure seekers have quite a time in a film which borrows from Homer's Odyssey and sparked a revival in folk singing. Still a hit on the satellite TV networks, set aside an afternoon and plan to laugh until it hurts.
2. Syriana. Featuring a few dozen extra pounds and a shaved-back hairline, this was not the pretty boy George viewers had grown accustomed to seeing on the big screen. However, Clooney used the extra weight to enhance the disillusionment of his CIA operative character and the critics definitely took notice, as he took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role. 1. Michael Clayton. As the "fixer" of a menacing corporation, Clooney has to deal with one of the biggest lawyers around who has lost his mind. As the story progresses, it's clear someone is trying to kill him and there are only a few options that will keep him alive at the end of the day. A tense thriller directed by Tony Gilroy, it's Clooney's best performance, one of his least self-conscious. Check satellite TV program guides for show times.
