What it is
Spiritual revelations can only be truly lived through faith in God and our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Our first understanding of how this experience is possible is through the prophets. Those mentioned more often than others in the Bible are Ezekiel, Daniel and John in the book of Revelations. The difference between a spiritual revelation and a dream is the level of consciousness that we possess when either happens. In a dream we are fast asleep when it happens and we only remember fragments of it when we wake up. In a spiritual revelation we are practically wide awake but unable to physically move. We know we are awake because we can sense our own physical presence which most times we can't in a dream. In a dream this physical presence exists in the dream. In a spiritual revelation this presence is outwardly but we know our spirit is quickened to see something beyond the physical.
How it happens
The quickening of the spirit is not a voluntary act and not a decision that any of us can make. Our spirit is not quickened through a thought process or by our will. Our spirit is quickened through our Lord and savior Jesus Christ and by God's will. Only God can make this possible and he does this by his will to those who he wishes to give this gift. The process by which the spirit is quickened requires certain things of our carnal sides. One of the most important ones is the dormancy of the physical. This part of us becomes dead for the spirit to alight. If it is moving then we are not in spirit. Spirit and man cannot share the same space in this arena because to receive this divine message only spirit can be awakened. A dream can also reveal a spiritual message but dreaming is different to having a spiritual awakening or awareness.
When does it happen
Another important factor to consider for spiritual revelations is the timing. If we are physically tired then we can't have one. This is not to say that after a good nights rest then naturally we should have our spirits quickened for a revelation. This is to say that we can't have one if we are physically tired because to have the spirit at work in this way takes a lot of energy out of us and only if the body has rested is this possible. Only if the subconscious is aware of what is happening can this happen fully for us to comprehend the message from God. This is like having all the necessary nutrients put in place before embarking on a long journey. If they aren't there then this journey won't be possible. God decides the time for a spiritual revelation because God also prepares us mentally, physically and spiritually to receive him and the message from him.
Verifying that it is real
How to know whether or not we have had a spiritual revelation is also decided by God. As in the bible he grants us signs and shows us proof that it was not a figment of our imagination but his strength quickening our spirit. We know that it is his work because nothing else we have ever experienced feels the same after this. We know that it is spiritual because through Christ he teaches us how to interpret the experience.
When we tell people
Telling people about spiritual revelations is difficult as expected. As mentioned earlier it is rare and uncommon. It is a gift from God to the individual that experiences it. We can expect ridicule for revealing a spiritual encounter. However what is of importance is our faith in God. Faith defines this experience. Faith decides whether it is real or not. Faith is also the key to interpretation.
Interpretation
Spiritual revelations can only be interpreted by God. If they are as genuine as we believe then only God can show us their meaning. They are also not subject to time for interpretation. A revelation may take ten years to unfold or a matter of minutes. Our worldly wisdom cannot interpret them. In the proof that they are real God grants us more than one element of proof for interpretation that it is his work and not ours. It is by our faith in him that we know that this experience is real.
How are we chosen to receive
Encountering a spiritual revelation or a quickening of spirit is a humbling and enlightening experience and one to be grateful to God. It is his love for us that gives us this blessing and not by our works or deeds. God decides who receives this gift. It is not a process of works or deeds that gets us this special reward.
