I don't think I've ever read a book like this that impacted me to the extent that "Nectar of the Grateful Victim" did. Even after finishing it, I'm still in awe of what it was that I just read.
The main character in the story is Maya. At the beginning, she is 19 years old and is referred to as "Maya the Optimist". She had far-reaching hopes and dreams that were one day shattered to pieces when she is selected for an arranged marriage with a man named Abichal, whom she had never met. At first, her family is "sold" on quite the glamorous sales pitch (I say this because we find out that a sales pitch is what it turned out to be) from Abichal's sister.
All seems like a dream until the wedding night, where the truth begins to unfold in the incarnation of a devastating, hope shattering nightmare. The promises turned out to be either overindulgences or straight out lies. Abichal was nothing like the man that he was played up to be. From there, a thirty year-long journey would challenge Maya to the very core of her being and she would prove the saying "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
First, I want to mention that the author is extremely articulate, definitely the daughter of a poet as she says in the book. When reading this, you are instantly pulled in emotionally. There are characters in the book (especially Abichal) that will probably give you the internal desire to commit violence, and other characters (Maya, Justina) that make you just want to reach out and give someone a hug.
There is another extremely important aspect of this book. It is a fictionalized account of real facts (and I'd wager that it is majority fact). As creative as many fiction authors are, you can't fake something like this. Matter of fact, much of what happened to Maya is actually what happened to the author herself, she changed the names and a few other things. This is actually a major draw.
Finally, you will see that it is rich in philosophy and valuable life lessons. Many of us could learn something from these experiences and there are a whole bunch of people in the UK who have. The merging of Eastern and Western philosophy is a side pursuit of my own which really caused this book to resonate with me.
I am typically a fan of action, science fiction, mystery, etc. I was not expecting to be drawn in to the extent that I was. To pull someone like me in is a testimony to just how well done this book is. I only have two thumbs to give thumbs up, but if I had more, I would put those up too.
