Let me first start off by introducing you to my nephew Garrett. Garrett is 11 years old. One day while visiting, Garrett was dressed up as a crazy clown with a paintball gun. I will tell you that he was very much into his character, no doubt influenced by Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in Batman Begins-The Dark Knight. He enjoyed doing his evil clown laugh and chasing my daughters around the house. If you saw him you would easily see that he is very much influenced by the media targeting his age group.
The media is not the only influence in Garrett's life or rather Garrett is not the only person in his household that is influenced by the media. His father, my older brother Jeff, is an avid gamer, mostly Call of Duty, so "like father like son". Garrett is even beginning to get good enough at the game to beat my brother, which means he most assuredly can beat me. My days of gaming ended with the Nintendo 64 when I had twins and I entered the pure child management phase of my life. Despite my brothers efforts to reintegrate me back into gaming I just can't quite get myself to dedicate all that time into gaming needed to be a worthy player. I guess I've been unplugged from the Matrix for too long. As for Garrett he is responding quite well to my brother's invitations of 1st-person-shooter game play as well as the arsenal of media aimed at keeping Garrett as a future consumer of action packed, gun wielding movie and gaming products. Further evidence is in Garrett's collection of G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures. And you should see Garrett in his new ghillie suit that he saved up for all summer (a ghillie suit is a type of camouflage clothing designed to resemble heavy foliage). He is ready to go out into the neighborhood hiding in the bushes with his Air Soft gun and snipe enemy targets. It's a good thing I know Garrett's personality is sweet and bright enough to know that it's all an act or otherwise I might be a little concerned. His grandmother on his mother's side sees it differently however. She can't understand why he gets so into his "violent" characters and wonders what all the sound effects are for. For us, my brother and I, sound effects are (still) normal. But she also had all girls and my brother says that's the reason she doesn't understand the mind of a young imaginative boy. She didn't grow up with all the video games either.
Knowing that my brother is playing these 1st-person-shooter games side by side with Garrett is a bit of a comfort for me. Jeff does regulate the amount of time Garrett puts into his gaming. He's also there to make sure he knows it's just a game. But in Garrett's defense he really isn't the kind of kid that can get lost behind the flickering screen for too long because Garrett is itching to get outside to play with his friends and re-enact the media he's been soaked in. But there might be cause for concern in families where parental guidance is more absent, especially if the child has a tendency to act out violently. As technology increases the speed and quantity at which the media is pumped into our lives, it seems the greater the responsibility the parents shoulder in teaching their children to be media literate. This means parents need to be proactive in learning about the technology and understand how it affects their children's lives. In short we need to be sure that parents are raising our children and NOT the media.
