Legal question regarding copyright law and university colors?
So I am thinking of making a tshirt to sell for a rivalry game in february(long ways off but I'm planning ahead) and I decided not to even worry about using my schools or our rivals logos so I don't have to worry about copyright there. I am making our shirt our schools color(red), and 3 words on the shirt that are a nickname for our rivals mascot I am planning on making my rivals school colors(gold and blue). The letters would be a gold outline and blue inside, and while my rivals school doesn't use that color design, I just want to make sure they couldn't do anything to me legally. They normally use gold letters, white letters, or rarely blue letters, but I have never seen the blue letters with a gold outline like I am planning. So should I be safe using the letter colors the way I am planning when they don't do anything in the same way, or even if they did do their letter colors in the same way could they even do anything to me legally?

They cannot sue you for using colours (that's the correct spelling as I'm in England) as you can't copyright colours or combinations of them. You are correct not to use their logo's however as they may be registered trade marks.
