The modern heavy metal band Tool was first formed in 1990. Through September of 1995, the band members consisted of Danny Carey on drums, Paul D'Amour on bass, Maynard James Keenan on vocals), and Adam Jones on guitar. However, D'Amour didn't like the direction the band was going in, and his disagreements with the creative process were holding up songwriting efforts. He left the band and was replaced in November of 1995 by Peach bassist Justin Chancellor.
The band has been very unique in all of rock music for taking the sub-genre known as "progressive metal" and infusing it with the post-Punk alternative metal stylings of the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century. Progressive metal is a mixture of "progressive rock", a style that coalesced in the early 1970s as what can best be described as rock music heavily inspired by classical music and serious literary poetry, and another 1970s invention: heavy metal, which while never originally as simplistic or stupid as it came to be for many bands in the 1980s did rely on certain amounts of "pure noise", repetitious guitar riffs, bombastic instrumental soloing and singing, piston-like driving rhythms, and often gloom-and-doom themes.
Progressive metal was essentially created by the band Rush in the mid-1970s. Legendary Rush guitar player Alex Lifeson has said that he is "madly in love with Tool". Tool have successfully re-formulated what Rush did into a more modern metal sound, and their success in this area has been amply rewarded.
In addition to their progressive-but-raw-and-doomy metal sound, Tool have created an aura of dark but not necessarily negative mysticism around themselves. In a 1994 interview, Carey asserted that the name "Tool" was inspired by an alleged 1949 book with the title of 'The Joyful Guide to Lachrymology' written by a "crop-spray contractor" named Ronald P. Vincent. "Lachrymology" would translate as the science of study of tears.
Apparently, the band members desired for their music and lyrics to be "tools" to be used by people for deepening their lachrymological awareness--which amounts to the philosophy that only through emotional and physical pain can a person grow into a higher level. The book in question cannot be found in the Library of Congress.
Since that time, it has become clear that many of the things the members of Tool say or write about in the band's online journal need to be taken with a large grain of salt. While they are all serious and talented musicians and writers, with Adam Jones also being a former Hollywood special effects master and classically trained and Carey now widely regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers in the world, they are a band with a mischievous streak and a dark sense of humor. 'The Joyful Guide to Lachrymology' probably actually translates as: no pain, no gain.
The band is seriously interested, however, in "occult" and even "Satanic" symbols and ideas, including those that are found in the Free Masons, the Church of Satan, the Enochian mysteries, spiritual alchemy, and sacred geometry. Mathematical concepts like the spiral and the Fibonacci sequence have made their way into their music and imagery. Considering their dark side,their heaviness, and their musical sophistication, Tool have had astounding commercial success. At the time of this writing, their last tour finished up in December of 2007.
