I have a collection of 13 years of photos of me and my siblings and i'm planning on making a photo album. Problem is, there are hundreds and hundreds of photos and i only have one photo album that can hold around 100-150 photos. How should i organize them? By year, by kid, by holiday? I have no idea!
Buy a $100 flat bed scanner and scan them in. For one, it will allow you time to look at each and every one, again, and think about your project. It also gives you the chance to make CD's or DVD's of the now digitized images to pass out (or e-mail at times).

I would go for - by year - as people grew up and times changed, and keep it in order that way.

Often on the back of some old photographs is a date stamp (along with other info not so needed here). I would look for them 1st and cull them from the herd. This also goes for the ones already marked by someone and then mark the ones you KNOW the dates. Next I would try to fill in the gaps with all the other prints NOT dated.

IF you happen to have any of the negatives, keep them in the loop as well. These are valuable family treasures and keeping them intact and as safe as you can could be a welcome treat to your kids kids. My parents old film from the 30's on up is still a treat to me today and by looking at them figured out a LOT I was never told..... wow..!

Because I was quite a shooter of film myself, from about 1964 (till about 2000 when I went full digital) I slid all my negatives in books made for such right from the git go. The stack of these books, in BW, color and slides will reach from floor to ceiling and some in boxes. I have 100's of thousands of images from 110 to 4x5 and even a few 8x10 negs I shot.. In my case, I scanned the actual film, letting my scanning program keep the numerical count, but it allowed ME to set up the parameters....

I choose - Book, page & frame number. It looks like this - 010101 - Book 01. Page 01. Frame 01.

082830 = Book 08. Page 23. Frame 30.

I then have folders on the hard drive with each film size - 110. 35mm. 120, 4x5 etc..

Inside each of these folders are 2 more folders. 1 for BW and 1 for color, and inside them are folders of each of the books of negs. Book 01. Book 02 and so on.

It actually works very well and is very similar to the darkroom days when I would look at my contact sheets, find a image I wished to play with, look on the back of the sheet to find what book of negs it's in and go pull the book. Now, the contact sheets are thumbnails in my computer and when clicked on give a image large enuf to actually study (but low rez) and the location is it's file number.. 211816.jpg..

If you actually scan them all, you could give them all on a disk, however, for a coffee table version of a real book you can now go through all your computerized images, picking the ones you want for the book and organize it that way..
