Independent films sometimes do better than their big-budget blockbuster counterparts. The mere fact that the studio is not controlling the movie and the director is given a free rein is why top independent films have been churned out for the last couple of years. On that note, below is a list of the best independent films of all times and why you should watch them before you die.
1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
This movie is a brilliant comedy by the famous British comedy group that satires most of the Middle Ages. King Arthur and his knights go on a trip to find the Holy Grail after being ordered so by a grumpy-looking God. Along the way, they meet interesting characters, including witches and killer rabbits.
Why you should watch it: It's done by the premier British comedy group who has made other top independent films such as 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' and 'And Now for Something Completely Different'. Also the characters have names such as Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. With such a winning formula, you can be sure it'll tickle your funny bone.
2) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Some say this is the best independent film made in the 20th century. It's a classic American film based on a classic American novel. It follows the story of Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck in his most memorable role) as he defends a black man from being falsely charged with raping a white woman, all seen from the eyes of Scout (Mary Badham), a six-year old tomboy.
Why you should watch it: It was listed as AFI's greatest movie of all times list and the best courtroom movie ever.
3) Se7en (1995)
This thriller follows the exploits of a deranged serial killer (played wonderfully by Kevin Spacey) who sees himself as doing God's work by choosing victims who embodied the seven deadly sins. Hot on his trail is the perfect pairing of Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt), who somehow find themselves tangled in the killer's web.
Why you should watch it: This BAFTA nominated independent film showcases superb acting and storyline. Any gore movie fan should be able to appreciate the ways the victims were killed based on their sins.
4) The Usual Suspects (1995)
Another crime thriller, this one is made Bryan Singer in what many see as his best work. This top independent film tells the story of 5 hijackers who exacts revenge on the police after being wrongfully accused. Along the way, they find out about Keyser Soze, a mysterious mastermind, who had ensnared these 5 men into blowing up a boat which killed all but one.
Why you should watch it: Brilliant story line and cinematography. This movie was also told in flashbacks, keeping the audience guessing about the identity of Keyser Soze.
5) Pulp Fiction (1994)
This Quentin Tarantino film has brought a new way in story-telling in the 90s. It follows a day of the life of two hit men, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) as they carry out an assignment for their boss. The story also alternates between them and Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), a struggling boxer who just fought his last fight.
Why you should watch it: The best independent film of 1994 will hook you with its bizarre and somewhat funny events that occur to its characters. Not forgetting to mention, the unique storyline and Tarantino's way of telling it will certainly make this movie a must-see.
