Anybody remember that scene from Die Hard with a Vengeance in Harlem?
Remember, the terrorist made Bruce Willis stand in his underwear with a poster in Harlem. On the poster it said "I hate n*ggers" !
A gang of black teenagers almost slaughtered him before Samuel L. Jackson intervened and rescued him.
What do you think would have happened if this was a real life situation. Like a white guy standing in Harlem for real with a sign saying the above quote
A similar situation happened to me on a city bus. The bus was filled mostly with black passengers, most of them middle school students, one of them an older African American lady. A few of the passengers were white, including an older, gruff-looking gentleman and a younger teenaged male. It just so happened that there was another older white man on the bus who was shouting obscenities and racial slurs, most of them directed at the school aged children around them. The man was obviously mentally unwell, but nevertheless he was being abusive, and to women and children, no less.
As is typical in these situations, everyone just did their best to ignore the ranting crazy person, a common mass social reaction that I've witnessed countless times. Everyone just ignores the subject of the episode and prays the bus miraculously completes it's run in half the usual time. However, this crazy white man was only becoming more abusive, the more he was being ignored.
The black lady spoke up, attempting to kindly ask the the man to stop, but her gentle reasoning manner had no effect on the man. Hers was the lone voice daring to speak out against the crazy man's lunacy, but the mentally ill man was oblivious to her attempts at a peaceful, reasonable solution.
"Look at this," the ranted crazy man, "nothing but n!ggers on this bus! I'm surrounded by black people!"
"AND WHAT AM I? BLUE?!?"
Every head turned to look at the gruff, stocky looking white guy who was seated within earshot of the ranting older white man. "I swear to God," said the tough white guy, "if you don't shut the f*** up, I'm gonna throw your crazy @ss right the f*** off this bus!"
"Watch out," whispered the white teenager, who had been standing next me, his face a mask of rage. He slipped by me and I noticed the boxcutter tucked in the sleeve of this kid's hoodie. The older black lady noticed it too, because she moved to stop him by grabbing him.
The bus quickly came to a stop. The bus driver turned around and shouted, "What's the problem back there?"
"This man is being abusive back here," said the older black lady, pointing at the older crazy man, while keeping a soothing arm on the hoodied-up white teen.
The bus doors opened and the black bus driver came back to stand next to the gruff white passenger. He told the crazy white guy that the transit police were on the way, and that if he did not get off the bus, he would be arrested. Apparently the man's insanity only went so far, and he grudgingly shuffled off of the bus, cursing and yelling obscenities the entire way. The bus waited for the transit cops to show up, by which time the crazy due was gone, and after giving the cops a quick report on what had happened, the bus driver pulled away from the curb and resumed his route.
With the cops and the crazy man gone, everyone breathed a sigh of relief and began discussing what had just happened. The black lady first thanked the bus' two samaritans, the gruff white dude, and the kid with the boxcutter, for coming to everyone's defense. While the tough guy smiled and talked with some 8th graders, I heard the older black lady talking with the young teen.
"So . . . what was that?" asked the black lady with a concerned smile.
"I'm sorry," said the teenager, hunching his shoulders as if to say 'I don't know'. "That guy was just pissing me off."
"Honey, you've got to try another way before resorting to violence. That man was obviously out of his mind. If you hurt him, then when the cops come, they'll be trying to arrest YOU, not HIM."
"I know," replied the teen, respectfully unfazed. "It's just that I'm from Savin Hill, and we don't play that sh!t."
CLASSIC!
True story, too.
