I am a part-time stock photographer, just started out. I have an idea of taking photos of commercial premises (hotels, offices, etc) in an unusual way and then approaching the company concerned to buy them. I would be looking at selling them them on an exclusive basis, selling the digital copy to do with as they want rather than prints. How much would you say I should sell a high quality, high resolution image for (something that could potentially be printed to billboard size)?
I think the thing is (being a business owner) the photos would have little to no value to me if I don't need them for something. Typically, i'd need situational shots inside my business - if someone rocked up and said I've taken this shot of your front gate would you like to buy it for X ... I'd probably say no.
I'm not sure you can put a price on it with what you've said, however unusual. Why waste time shooting the building and trying to sell it back - why not do a portfolio and take it into a business. I'd respect someone with an eye for design that did something that little bit different, if I could also have some input.
You might also think about website packages - a lot of shots these days end up at 72 dpi on a we bite - it might be a cheaper option but you could sell them a bit like istockphoto ie low res - hi res price.
And lastly - just bung any unused work on sxc or istock anyway - someone may have a use for it.
To answer your original question - depends on the work but no more than £20 -30 if it was an unplanned photo.
