I'm a huge 80s music afficionado and even though I'm not the biggest SRV fan I really wondered about this.
He's very talented, but he made some of the most "un 80s" 80s music ever. Especially his very bluesy first few albums in 1983-'85 at the height of the synthpop era. Did it clash with new wave, MJ, Madonna, Van Halen, Duran Duran, Prince and all the other MTV artists? Were kids into it or did it appeal more towards classic rock fans who were into more of a real sound?
The irony is by 1989 he seemed more "in the times". Not only does the song "Crossfire" have a little more of a pop edge, but bluesier or more natural guitar rock had made a bit of a comeback (i.e. Black Crowes, John Mellencamp, even Guns N Roses) and I'm sure after his death he skyrocketed in popularity. Kids in the 90s and early 2000s liked him...ironically I would guess MORE than when he first came out.
Was SRV popular in the 80s? Depends on who you are asking. Anyone with a blues background will say yes.
Rock is grounded in the blues. Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are prime examples. For those of us who did not care for the pop crap spewing out from MTV, SRV represented basic raw rock. Yes, he was quite popular with a great many folks back in the 80s.
