So I was reading this article in a music mag the other week and I ran across an article that really took my breath away. It was the results of a survey of readers asking them to pick what they thought was the greatest American rock band in history. And, instead of picking, I dunno, Hendrix or somebody, the respondents picked Pearl Jam.
I would have been fine with it had the poll been asking about the best band of the 1990s or something like that. But this poll was asking people to rank against literally every American band of the past 60 years.
Now, I'm a big fan of Pearl Jam. I just was taken aback by the notion that this little band from the 90s could somehow beat out every other band that has come along in all that time.
But I got to really thinking about the band and all the stuff it has done in the past two decades, and I really could sort of see the point.
You really could consider a lot of other groups in the same company there at the top of the list: From Van Halen and Creedence Clearwater Revival to REM and Guns 'N Roses. But Pearl Jam really kind of sits above all them.
After long consideration, I guess Pearl Jam really is the top of the heap. They've been consistently great for almost two decades now, ever since their first album Ten came out in 1991. And they've just stayed on top.
I think I'm ready to agree with the masses on this one - that Pearl Jam is really the greatest American rock band of all time. I truly wouldn't have believed it before thinking about it, but it is well-deserved.
To be sure, Pearl Jam has been the jolt the music industry has needed: They maintain their honesty while producing awesome music; and they do it all while avoiding the problems of the spotlight that afflict so many other bands. In the end, I have to give it to them, they're an awesome group.
