I do not have any clothes deserving of a true rock star. No cool rock t-shirts, no leather pants. I have a blonde mullet wig and some sweet bandannas. With just those I could pull off the rock star look, I am now convinced I could be as much a rock star as Myles Kennedy was Monday night at the Slash and Friends concert in Calgary, AB. I do not care if Justin Bieber lip syncs at the dismal MTV VMA's. But Kennedy, the lead singer, of rock icon, Slash's band, lip syncing classic tunes like "My Michelle" and "Paradise City" is a sad day in music. It was akin to finding out there is no Santa Clause or that the girl you made out with after the concert has herpes.
In all fairness let me rewind to before we were standing 5 people back from the stage at the Calgary Stampede Corral watching Myles Kennedy badly lip sync. Is there good lip syncing? I was halfway to the Stampede grounds from the C-train, which had stopped operating due to some accident, when I realized in my excited pre-concert preparation I had forgot to wear deodorant! After the sweaty 11 block warm up, I met my good friend Dereck. We chased a couple Fubar energy pills with red bull and vodka out of a silver flask and entered the venue.
We filled our plastic glasses disappointingly 2/3 full of "Canned Domestic Beer" for $6.75 a pop and made our way to the floor. Totally uninterested in the opening band, which will go unnamed and unremembered we walked in halfway through the first song performed by Slash and Friends. The acoustics were average and the stage was bright, the back drop, Slash's famous skull and cross bones which represent a cross between a guitar and an anorexic penis.
We took up position side by side towards the back of the crowd on the floor. The fans were a complete mixed bag of aging bangers, young kids, Goth teens, jersey shore rip offs and leather-clad cougars. Everyone united in the desire to see Slash, Saul Hudson. The second song "Night Train" got everyone, including myself pumped up.
The band staggered classic GNR such as "Civil War" and "Rocket Queen" with Velvet Revolver hits and solo Slash songs. If you overlook the fact that Slash has one ugly mug, it is nothing short of art to watch him bend the guitar and its strings to his will. Arguably one of the best guitarists of our time it was a treat to watch him do what he was placed on this earth for.
It was during "Rocket Queen" that I wished for the piercing vocals of Axl Rose up on stage. Dereck and I made another beer run and we were happy to learn that alcohol was still being served during the main act unlike at so many other events these days. We walked back to the concert floor, but not before garnering a couple "Schwing, Schwings" from some cougars in body suits with silver chains around their waists. God bless Rock and Roll.
The performance of "Starlight", which Kennedy recorded with Slash was well done. The crowd reacted with soulful musical love making, with more cell phones than lighters held in the air.
The fans absolutely erupted to my favourite song of the night " Sweet Child of Mine". My nipples were hard the entire time, hearing one of the most memorable riffs of my childhood was worth the ticket price alone. I wished I could have been closer to the stage but there was no penetrating the crowd during this song.
The band retook the stage for an encore at the crowds demand, I already knew the show was not over as the pre-planned return to stage has become all too predictable. I was proven correct as they followed with the best song on Slash's new album "By the Sword".
It was at this point that we made the decision, which nearly ruined the entire experience. I pushed my way towards the front of the stage. It was 10:11pm and I was enjoying "My Michelle" when Dereck nudged me, I did not even need to hear him but could read his lips clearly, " He's lip syncing!" I followed his gaze to Myles Kennedy, at first I did not see it, as I didn't want to believe it. I had never been to a concert where the artist actually faked it. But sure enough the delay was obvious; his lips would curl up around the words and then continue up the side of his face long after they should have been moving to the next word. I was floored. I will not lie, it felt like when you walk up to your car only to find the window smashed and the stereo missing.
The final song " Paradise City" was half over before I regained my composure and stopped studying Kennedy's cheating lips and concentrated on the true artist. I was within 12 feet of the man! I remembered why I was there. To see Slash plug his guitar into his pace maker and rock it till he drained the battery!
Worth ever Penny! Including the "Canned Domestic Beer".
