Are people truly more overweight today?
I do not truly believe there didn't use to be as many overweight people. I think the difference is our definition of overweight has changed. A size twelve use to be sexy (Marilyn Monroe) now anything over size three or four is obese. Just wandering what other people think. I admit I am overweight, but I am not trying to justify myself. I am just worried that we have begun to see anorexic as good and healthy as overweight. I also fear that doctors have begun to make decisions based on fashion industry standards. My husband began to lose weight and was actually gaunt and unhealthy looking and still above the ideal wieght by medical standards. Your thoughts.
Well, Marilyn Monroe wasn't a current day size 12. She was a vintage size 12. Her measurements were roughly 36-24-36, in modern sizing this would make her a size 8 bust, size 0 waist and size 4 hips.
In the 1950's, the average woman was 5ft3, 130lb with measurements 36-28-38.
In 2005, the average woman was 5ft5, 160lb with measurements 39-34-41.
So the average female has gone from a pear shaped size 8 to an apple shaped size 12/14.
It is true the definition of obesity keeps changing. The BMI cutoff was lowered a few years ago and millions of people that were classified as normal weight became overweight literally overnight.
The best way to know if you are truly overweight or not is to know your level of body fat. There are lots of people being misclassified as overweight that are not actually overfat. They perhaps just have a larger body frame than average or more muscle mass which is where the extra weight is coming from, as opposed to excess body fat.
Anorexia is a serious mental illness, anyone that sees this as good has serious problems. And anorexics often have high body fat due to extreme muscle loss, so they just become skinny-fat. Doctors are well educated people, they are not going to be influenced by fashion standards. If they are, well then they shouldn't be allowed to practice.
