There are a lot of fake autographs being sold on eBay. Unless you witnessed the signing yourself, there is no way to be absolutely sure if the signature is authentic. All those certificates of authentication are not worth as much as the paper it is printed on.
What I try to do is check both completed and on going auctions that have the signature and compare them. You will be surprised how many auctions have very different looking signatures.
Now you have to figure out which one is real. Try to google for the signature. Often fan sites will have images of the real signature. Compare the signature in the auction to those you find on google.
Even if it looks like a match, you still can't be sure. There are some good forgers out there and it would almost be impossible to determine if it is a forgery just by looking at the pictures.
I personally don't trust those sellers that sell lots of "authentic" signatures. I rather take my chances on sellers that are selling from their own private collection. These sellers are not in the business of making money off signatures so they have less of an incentive to fake it.
It is buyer beware, so do your research before buying autographed items on eBay.
