When you're learning how to play bass there are literally hundreds of books out there to choose from. Standing In The Shadows of Motown (written and transcribed by Alan Slutsky, aka Dr Licks) is just about the best bass book out there. This book looks at the life of legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson and also features full or partial transcriptions of 49 of his bass lines.
The book essentially divides into 3 sections.
Section 1 is the biographical section of the book. This looks at where Jamerson was born, when he first started playing the upright bass, how he transitioned to electric bass and has a more detailed look at his Motown session career.
Section 2 is a look at Jamerson's sound. This section looks at his instrument, his amps, what strings he used and how he played. There's also a 4 page analysis of his style by 6 string maestro Anthony Jackson.
Section 3 is the meat and potatoes of the book and features full and partial transcriptions of a range of Motown classics, including Reach Out I'll Be There, For Once In My Life, I Was Made To Love Her, Bernadette, Shotgun, Darling Dear, Home Cooking and more.
The transcriptions range from the complex (most of the songs listed above have incredibly complex basslines, both harmonically and rhythmically) to the easy (songs like Baby Love, This Old Heart of Mine, Get Ready, Nowhere to Run). A great feature of the book is that it comes with a CD with backing tracks to play the transcriptions along to - and the bass lines are played by a host of famous bass players (John Patitucci, Will Lee, James Jamerson Jr, Francis Rocco Prestia, Anthony Jackson, John Entwistle and Pino Palladino are among the stellar cast of bass players who took part in the project).
There are many bass players who cite James Jamerson as a primary influence. Bass players like Billy Sheehan, Paul McCartney, Rob Deleo (Stone Temple Pilots), Pino Palladino, Rocco Prestia, Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones. The list goes on and on.
Standing In The Shadows of Motown is a great book to help bass players of any level understand the genius of James Jamerson, and through the wealth of transcriptions start analysing some of the things that made Jamerson so great and start incorporating them into your own playing style.
