This week Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright died from cancer. My father's always disturbed when one of his music idols dies "so young"; he completely forgets that, while he's been listening to the same songs forever, the years have been chugging by. I remember the Beatles from my crib, and I cannot believe it was almost 40 years ago (in fact, I keep forgetting that there is a "40 years ago" pertaining to me!).
I can understand his dilemma - I hear Love Shack and I'm transported to my High School days at Notre Dame; these songs provided a wall of sound to our Teen Adventures, and we relate the awesome feeling of being 16 again to the songs. So if I'm DJing a wedding with a lot of people my age Love Shack always gets them up.
I guess we use music, in a way, to create our life's timeline. Everything that happened when Love Shack was popular pertained to me as a teen. And so, before that, Frankie Valli, Three Dog Night and Beatles all transport me to my childhood. I can remember being a small child laying on the backseat of my parents' Olds, hearing AM Radio, with Melanie who had a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates, and some nun singing the Our Father, and the Contours and the Sylistics. Even today these songs creep me out, summoning long dead feelings effortlessly, giving me a taste of what a 6 year old boy feels.
So songs represent times and places. I remember how it felt to be a 16 year old hellacious driver when the band Boston plays today on the local Classic Rock station (the only station to play Boston ad nauseum!). And I remember when my newfound H.S. Freshmen friends introduced me to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (among "other things") when I was 13, and even now I retain that initiation whenever I hear it. Same with Madonna and early rap, who bring back my early DJ days at places like the old 95 House. Music has that quality to transport you in time.
Maybe we never let go of our past. Aging is a strange attribute - I've told you before how I still feel 21, until I pass a mirror! I really do "feel" that innocent surge (stupidity?) of a young teen when WPLR plays the Cars or Van Halen, or even Iron Maiden or The Wall. Definitely Zeppelin. In a way, like a photo, you imprint a bit of your soul onto a song, and when you hear it your soul reverts back to give you a taste!
So I understand my father's dilemma. If the artist died of old age, your soul may die a little too. At the very least it points out that you're not 16, or 21 anymore. But thank God that we still have these musical snapshots of how we used to be! What's gonna happen when McCartney moves on to a better world!?!
