If you are a genealogist, either a beginner or a professional, you will love the show, Who Do You Think You Are? A hit show last year, which was the first year for it. This year the show will feature celebrities such as Vanessa Williams, Tim McGraw, Ashley Judd, Kim Cattrall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosie O'Donnell, Lionel Richie and Steve Buscemi. Vanessa Williams will be featured in the first episode.
You can feel the shivers, just like the participants in the show feel when they are shown a revealing document. Your eyes tear up when they almost start crying after learning about their ancestors as Vanessa teared up after learning how courageous, smart and honorable her father and grandparents were.
Her grandfather fought in the Civil War for the Union as he was from New York. Although African American, he was a free man in New York. He was among the first colored soldiers who could serve in the army. He had married a white woman before enlisting and with the bounty offered for soldiers to fight in the war, he had bought land for his family.
Vanessa started her search by locating the gravestone for her grandfather. On the stone it stated that he was a colored soldier. She then, went to the National Archives in Washington D.C. to find his service record. Her maternal great grandfather was a teacher and the first black representative in his state of Tennessee. She used the 1880 and 1910 censuses to find these people with their wives and children. The colored men married white women and the children were listed as mulatto.
Last year, genealogists shuddered while watching folks handle those precious documents. This year, Vanessa is shown wearing gloves as she looked at her pictures and certificates. One should always wear gloves when handling certificates and pictures to protect them from dirt and skin oil.
Critics of the show want to see ordinary people find their families. It looks easy as the show producers have all the records found ahead of time in the right libraries and buildings and with experts to help out. Everyone wants help with their "brick walls", the ancestors you just cannot find. I have been looking for over thirty-five years for my grandmother and an uncle.
This Friday night the show, on NBC, will find the family and ancestors of Tim McGraw. It should be interesting and emotional as well as show us some methods of finding our family.
