The Slam Dunk contest is the best part of the NBA's All Star weekend but watching it is bittersweet because the jam session could be so much better. Here are some proposals to make this big event into a feature that captivates fans around the world.
First, the number of dunkers needs to increase. Four contestants is not enough. This number needs to be at least 6 and maybe even 8. A more diversified field will draw more interest and stir even more creativity within the players as competition grows fierce. I understand the NBA does not want to make this into a drawn out event that loses its luster as time wanes by. This can be easily rectified with my next proposal.
The following change must be made: players must only have 45 seconds to complete a dunk attempt. After 45 seconds, the player can have 2 final attempts to get a dunk. The current rules provide for 2 minutes with 2 emergency dunks and this is what can be devastating to what is supposed to be an action packed event.
Nobody ever wants to see Nate Robinson or Chris Andersen miss 10 straight dunks (or however many there were) again. While ultimately a player such as Robinson or Andersen may be able to finish a fantastic dunk off, it has lost most of its luster after 5 or more failed attempts. 45 seconds provides plenty of time for two or three, or possibly four attempts. If a player can't get a dunk down in this amount of time, the attempt needs to be resolved and not embarrassingly linger. With a proposed shorter clock, the action will be faster and players will bring everything they have right away - knowing they can't rely on 2 minutes of cushioning.
I don't know how the NBA selects slam dunk contestants, but something needs to be done about who participates. I think there should be 8 total contestants and the NBA should choose four. With the remaining entries, each team will nominate a participant in which fans will get to vote on their favorite four to see. This overcomes several problems in one swoop. First, because teams are electing representatives, players that don't want to be selected can automatically take their hat out of the ring and have someone else from their team get the chance to be picked. Secondly, each team is usually very aware of players who might be more obscure to mainstream but can really put on a show.
Perhaps under my idea, teams that really want to get their representative in the Slam Dunk Contest can submit practice videos or other footage to YouTube in attempts to curry favor with fans and lobby for votes. This would go a long way to ensuring that only the most deserving and desiring players get to compete for the title of a slam dunk champion. In the end, this will produce much higher quality dunk contests.
I appreciated the NBA's creativity with the dunkoff during the Sophmore-Rookie game but it turned out to be very half-hearted. Demar Derozan clearly was too much for Eric Gordon even before the "contest" started. Even had they been more evenly matched, there were still only two dunks apiece for each which sounds more like a forced hurry up half time show than a "dunkoff". Afterwards Derozan admitted that he was holding back so this was going to come well short of producing any electricity no matter what.
For scoring, I'd like to see the judges go digital and use.5s in rating dunks. This would help separate scores and get rid of the always undesirable 10 card for a dunk that does not deserve a perfect score. 10s should not be thrown around they currently are. There are some good, very good, and even great dunks that deserve high grades, but you can't have a true 10 like Vince Carter's 360 Windmill or Michael Jordan's hanging free throw line tongue dunk fall into the same category as a nice between the legs dunk we've seen a million times before. With just a.5 decimal available, this would help dunk score accuracy.
I have other ideas on how to change the Slam Dunk contest, but I'll save those for later. I feel these are the most vital proposals, but before I go I have to call out Lebron James for backing out of the 2010 Slam Dunk contest after he virtually committed to it in 2009. Lebron, get out of your seat and get in the event for the fans. You have way too much athletic ability to sit in the first row and hold up 10 cards with all the unathletic players like Chancey Billups and old timers like Shaq and Kevin Garnett (at least in minutes played).
In sum, I know the NBA is conscious of the popularity of the Slam Dunk Contest, but I'm not sure they know how big it is on the streets. Everybody talks about it, from the casual fan to the NBA players themselves. If you can make it better, it can become even bigger and cement itself as an always legendary event.
