Did Bob Weir, of the Grateful Dead, ever actually get to take a solo?
While he was with the Dead, not with Ratdog. And if so, Can you give me a particular date or show.
Yes Bobby does take a bona fide, full fledged solo on a song.
The Dead's early-mid 80's versions of "Little Red Rooster" typically feature Bobby playing the worst, and I mean the absolute worst slide guitar I have ever heard in my life. It sounds like a metal claw against a chalkboard. Check out the one from the DVD called Dead Ahead. Yikes!!
I've been eternally puzzled as to why the boys performed "Little Red Rooster" this way. When you consider how awesome a guitar player Bobby is otherwise (why let Bob embarrass himself?), and the fact that Jerry was an accomplished pedal steel player (how bout Jer playing the slide??) it doesn't make any sense.
For me the highlight of the whole song is when Brent takes a verse or 2 with his whiskey-drenched voice. But even then about half the versions I have don't even feature Brent singing at all. Go figure.
